This was an assignment for my high school ceramics class, in which we made pinch pots and combined them. I decided to make a piece inspired by dry lotus seed pods. I made lots of small pinch pots and nestled them inside a larger one, almost like a pie crust. I was very careful that I didn’t make the piece too geometric or circular; I wanted it to feel organic and natural. The ceramics program at my school had just started again after an eight year hiatus, so we didn’t have many glazes or test tiles. To determine how to glaze this piece, I helped make test tiles of the new glazes and at least 8 different combinations of glazes before settling on my final plan. I ended up layering four different glazes to get my desired result: brown like a dry lotus seed pod, but with warm purples and blues as well depending on how the light catches the piece.
