This mobile is folk-art inspired with a geometric twist. The birds are streamlined in a traditional western folk-art style, while the hanger shape resembles branches. I designed them in Adobe Illustrator, cut them out using a laser engraver, and then painted and assembled them.
This piece is designed to be sold as an accessory for a kid’s room, so I thought a lot about the requirements of mass production when I made it. Here’s how it would work: the user buys a kit containing all the materials (birds, hanger, string etc) but assembles the mobile themselves, and gets to choose the placement of the birds. This is possible because the branch-like hanger has small groups of holes, resembling berries or flowers, and this gives many choices of how to hang the birds. This also lends a more personal touch to the mobile, while also decreasing production and assembly costs.
